Q&A with Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV

Name: Asif Ghafoor

Role: CEO of Be.EV

Who are Be.EV?

Be.EV are a provider of public EV charging infrastructure. We run and develop concentrated regional public charging networks across the North of England and nationally, in partnership with local authorities, other public sector organisations and private businesses. Working closely with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), we operate the largest public EV charging network in the GM region.

We act as a one-stop-shop for EV charging. That means we manage the whole process end to end, taking the burden off the landowner.

How many locations do Be.EV currently have?

The network in the North West currently consists of around 150 charge-points, but we have lined up sites for 1,000 more and have ambitious growth plans across the North and beyond.

Target locations?

Sites have to be publicly accessible and prominent/visible from road side.

How many new locations are you targeting?

We’re looking for sites for another 4,000 chargers in the medium term. This could either be in our core region (across the whole North of England, North Wales and into parts of the Midlands) or partnering with an anchor client to roll out a network of chargers across multiple sites in a new region.

Size requirements?

Anything from 0.2 acres of land for a charging hub or just a couple of bays in a high-footfall location (shopping centres, retail parks).

Freehold or Leasehold?

Flexible – happy to purchase outright or to just lease land or bays.

How are deals typically structured?

Revenue share and traditional rent models offered.

All infrastructure costs and ongoing maintenance paid by Be.EV.

We offer secure long-term income, 10-20 year leases.

Recent openings or new locations in the pipeline?

We have just signed the first 10 leases for the first phase of a major project with Trafford Borough Council in Greater Manchester, and are working with a number of NHS trusts and universities. In terms of private business, we have signed up a flurry of leisure, retail and hospitality businesses – Thornton Hall in Yorkshire being the most recent one – and are now also securing sites in Merseyside, Shropshire and Cumbria as well as talking to a few national retail chains.

Do you pay Intro fees?

Yes, fees of 10% of headline rental or 2% of purchase price, which is payable for each site.

Guaranteed minimum fee of £5,000 for each successful introduction.  We aim to response within 48 hours.
